“Nobody’s Stopping You Now” from the new Lake Street Dive album Obviously
Out March 12th on Nonesuch Records
Pre-Order Obviously NOW: https://smarturl.it/ObviouslyLSD
———————
Over the summer, Rachael was fortunate to spend some time on a beautiful remote island off the western coast of Canada. Her pals Elise Boeur and Adam Iredale-Gray were kind enough to learn Nobody’s Stopping You Now for one of our livestreams. Here we are in Elise’s verdant garden (from which she partook of many tasty things!) which doubled as the livest of tracking rooms at Fiddlehead Studio!

Shot and edited by Taylor Ashton
Audio recorded and edited by Adam Iredale-Gray

LYRICS

Lay down girl
The summer’s coming on
Take off your make up and take off your shoes
Trade in a dress for something over sized
And let your mind go wherever you choose

Don’t try to be a woman anymore
Nobody’s taught you how
Skin your knees and throw punches in the air
Nobody’s stopping you now
It’s okay to step away from the crowd
Nobody’s stopping you now

You’re on the cusp of an obsession
Time is not on your side
All winter slaving for perfection
But somehow you’re never satisfied

That hunger will last you for a lifetime
Until you learn how to set it down
Sip the nectar from the honeysuckle bush
Nobody’s stopping you now
It’s okay to let the real you out
Nobody’s stopping you now

Lay down girl and rest your weary head
I know you’ll make it through somehow
Dip your toes down deep into the river bed
Nobody’s stopping you now
It’s okay to say it right out loud
Nobody’s stopping you now

Since then, however, Angeli has changed his tune. “He felt like he was betrayed by the president,” Angeli’s attorney Al Watkins, who has also represented the St. Louis gun couple, told the AP. Watkins said in a statement to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his client wants to talk about “whether the words of former President Trump were understood by Mr. Chansley to be nothing short of an invitation to go to the Capitol with the President to ‘fight like hell.’”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died at the hands of the mob that besieged the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, will lie in honor next week in the building’s Rotunda, congressional leaders said Friday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer released a joint statement saying: “The heroism of Officer Sicknick and the Capitol Police force during the violent insurrection against our Capitol helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy and ensure that the Congress was not diverted from our duty to the Constitution. His sacrifice reminds us every day of our obligation to our country and to the people we serve.”

Congress will hold a ceremonial arrival for Sicknick on Tuesday night, after which a viewing period will be held overnight for members of the Capitol Police. Lawmakers will pay tribute Wednesday morning before a ceremonial departure for Arlington National Cemetery, where Sicknick will be interred.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the ceremonies will be open to invited guests only.

Bill Maher had Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying, a married couple who are evolutionary biologists. They apparently believe that COVID-19 was created in a Wuhan lab, from a natural virus that was experimented on and enhanced. They had nothing to say about whether its origin was malicious or was only designed for study and experimentation. They are also reluctant to take the mRNA vaccines because they are too novel; there have been no prior mRNA vaccines in use. They prefer the AstraZeneca vaccine because it is closer to a traditional vaccine, where we have lot of experience.

I admit that I have long been concerned about mRNA vaccines but that’s not based on any scientific knowledge but only that we have no experience with such vaccines.

Any lizard who is familiar with this couple?

Who to believe, a couple of nobodies, or my friend who is an expert in infectious disease who told me in early February 2020 that SARS-Cov2 would spread worldwide? Or my other friend who had grants from WHO to maintain SARS cultures and sits on the vaccine discussions? Tis a real puzzler.

I stand by what I said yesterday: the worst way this all plays out is for MTG (and maybe even Boebert and/or Cawthorn) to step so far over the line that one or more of them gets expelled or forced to quit.

At which point Gohmert! and Foxx and Car Thief and all the other crazies who are just as batshit as the new 3 but know how to conceal it better? They get a free pass, becoming untouchable because the GOP has done its part and “now is the time for compromise and unity.”

And it’s not like Greene ends up losing. She doesn’t want to be in Congress to do her job. She wants notoriety and she wants to be a martyr and she’ll get it.

This sucks no matter how you slice it.

Bill Maher has his share of objectionable guests (e.g. Ann Coulter, Kellyanne) but he also has interviewed people who are thoughtful and experts on critical topics. Usually I have familiarity with the guest and so can evaluate the merits of the exchange; in this case, they were totally new to me.

re: #77 The Ghost of a Flea

Actual scientist, but sus because he’s “intellectual dark web” and hangs with a bunch of far-right entryist figures…and because he’s hanging with Maher, who’s an authentic antivaxer.

Based on wikipedia, the intellectual dark web (IDW) is infested with people who we would want to avoid: Ben Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, etc. The wiki article also reveals that apparently many of those who watch IDW channels eventually migrate to alt-right channels.

re: #85 BlueSpotinAL

The mRNA vaccines, both of which have been approved internationally, have an efficacy percentage in the mid 90%.
According to an announcement by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) earlier today, following the approval of the vaccine, it was found to be about 60% effective in the trials on which the agency based its decision to approve it.

In Israel, where I’m currently locked down like the entire country, the results from the Pfizer mRNA vaccine rollout have so far been a huge success based on the analysis provided by several prominent health organizations.

The mRNA vaccine basically gets the body to replicate and then take out a small component that COVID-19 uses to spread and infect, so that the immune system recognizes, attacks and builds an immunity from it.
In contrast, the AstraZeneca vaccine is made from a weakened version of a cold virus from chimpanzees, modified to resemble a coronavirus.

I’m finally able to get the first Pfizer vaccine shot this Tuesday. While I’m not without moments of hesitation, I trust the science behind the mRNA vaccines and the success rate more than I’d trust a “classic” vaccine personally. If only because I’ve had flu vaccines fail me in the past.

Here in Czech Republic, the former Minister of Health has publicly stated he believes the SARS-CoV-2 most likely escaped from the virology center in Wuhan owing to “less than optimal” containment policies (he’s actually been there before and his observation was that their containment protocols were generally not as stringent as they should’ve been), and that it was an “unfortunate accident” - but he has zero problem with mRNA vaccines, stating that the science behind them is clear and there’s nothing dangerous whatsoever about them.

Of course, he’s just spitballing as to the origin of the virus, and he admits that and he’s said that if it’s proven otherwise, he’d be the first to acknowledge that he was mistaken.

Bret Samuel Weinstein /ˈwaɪnstaɪn/ is an American biologist and evolutionary theorist who came to national attention during the 2017 Evergreen State College protests. He is a member of the informal group known as the intellectual dark web.

(much more, he turned into a libertarian and appears on Joe Rogan’s and Jordon Peterson’s shows, and oh yes, he’s a racist)

Bret Weinstein (Wikipedia)

His brother Eric Ross Weinstein is a financial manager and finance commentator. He is the managing director of Theil Capital (that Peter Theil). He is also the person who coined the term Intellectual Dark Web which was later popularised by Bari Weiss in the New York Times (who described them as purged from academia over free speech), the group of libertarian “critical race theory” (racists), critics of “cancel culture and political correctness” (we don’t take responsibility for our own actions), misogynists, &c.

I forgot the source now, but I’ve seen it noted that scientists have been working on mRNA vaccines for about 25 years or so - it’s not really all that “new”, it’s just that now they’ve perfected it. Yes. My SARS expert friend mentioned how the original SARS vaccine made one more susceptible to catching SARS (or reacting to SARS - it has been a while since he told me). Made me pessimistic until clinical trials came out.

This is just elementary tactics. “We’re ready to do this…with your or without you. Your choice.”

Repubs need to stop whining and start dealing.

The Republicans have lost the ability to deal since Obama’s first term. Obama worked to get cooperation on the ACA, made modifications in response to GOP requests, and then received not a single GOP vote in the Senate. The GOP has no interest in working for the well being of our nation but only to secure their permanent dominance in our political life. To assist in this dominance, they are working overtime on disenfranchising black voters by instituting more restrictive voter requirements.

The problem with claiming that COVD-2 escaped from a lab is that it had to come from the environment before it got into a lab, so why not just skip the lab part altogether and assume it came from an animal? The Chinese could be lying, but everyone claims they do not recognize the virus. If it had leaked from a lab, and they wanted to hide that fact, they would have known the source and could have easily laid blame there.

The idea it escaped from a lab is paired with the idea that it was being studied or developed as a weapon. That way wingnuts can claim China attacked us (by killing a whole bunch of their people first, apparently).

They also claim various figures in the USA were secretly working with China on this, such as Bill and Melinda Gates, Dr. Anthony Fauci, TEH JOOOOOS, &c.

None of it makes sense but it really doesn’t have to. Wingnuts only need an “other” for their anger, and Asian nations have long attracted the anger of conservatives.

(There is plenty to be angry with China “the government” about, such as their ongoing genocide against the Uighur people, but that is not sufficient to drive wingnut anger: Uighur people aren’t us.)

The sensible solution even if all that nonsense was true and it really was a biological attack on the USA or the world would be to work together to defeat the spread of the disease within our borders and help other countries do the same.

Conservatives for the most part can’t do that, because their faith leaders (Trump and lesser figures) tell them it’s a hoax or it will go away or it’s not as severe as the flu.

Like religious texts, if you think about the claims for a little bit they are openly contradictory.

I completely agree, but you have to admit, the efforts that they’re making are just as ludicrous as the ones they made trying to normalize President Windbag. It allows us to readily identify the poseurs and to check the source before starting to gin up our outrage as we can expect context free controversies as everything attempts to be placed in a GOP frame.

You would think that by now some of these guys would know better but some habits die hard, even more so while the checks continue to clear.

If it had leaked from a lab, and they wanted to hide that fact, they would have known the source and could have easily laid blame there.

Their theory was more complicated than that. They were asserting that the virus had been manipulated to be more destructive to the human body — that instead of just having pulmonary effects, it was changed to attack other systems too. They did not claim that it was a bioweapon but that scientists had enhanced its capabilities.

They also made a claim that I had not heard previously: the available evidence had shifted on the origin of the disease; the latest evidence no longer favors a naturally occurring virus, but rather one from a lab. But now that I know somewhat more about this couple, I am skeptical of that claim, unless someone can provide a reliable source. Dr Lizardo did say in #97 above that the former Czech Minister of Health has publicly stated he believes the SARS-CoV-2 most likely escaped from the virology center in Wuhan owing to “less than optimal” containment policies , but the Minister admitted that was only speculation on his part. Maybe the WHO team will answer that question.

The whole “bioweapon” argument is completely stupid if you think about it for ten seconds: it’s the worst bioweapon you could think of. Much of the time it does nothing to the targets, and most affects humans that are old or medically compromised, which means not soldiers or anyone of fighting age. It’s combination of transmissibility and lethality means it spreads uncontrollably and is almost guaranteed to end up infecting the aggressor.

The scandal for China is not that the virus emerged there: it was the instinctive, autocratic reaction by the government to cover up, delay, and lie about it.

I should be in bed, but I just remembered…

The “escaped from Wuhan lab” theory has been around for a while. Someone reputable (Medcram?) near the beginning of this, probably April, went over the evidence and noted that the way the coronavirus infects humans was by a mechanism that computer models showed would not work, so the “modified and escaped from a lab” is unlikely. Why, after all, would they pick the infection route that they were sure would fail in designing the virus?

So computer models should be treated with caution, and covid-19 came from (probably Chinese) bat populations.

Doing that would involve reducing class size, which would involve hiring additional (teaching and administrative/janitorial) staff and expanding facilities.

Which would cost money.

Lot cheaper if you skip the “safely” part.

Oh and the sewing machines they use generally run $3000-$5000 dollars. Fully computerized. Plug in what your want and they do the rest. Half the time the human isn’t even needed.

According to Repubs, a Republican president:

- Cannot be tried for criminal acts in office because a DOJ opinion says such

- Any such criminal acts are outside the purview of Congress because it is the job of the courts to try and convict, so any such crimes must wait until the president is out of office

- Any and all political crimes are also outside the purview of Congress so long as some asshole in the Office of Legal Counsel can argue that such fall under the powers of the executive branch

- Any impeachment effort launched less than 2 years until a presidential election are invalid because it’s the job of the voters to decide if a president should be removed from office

- Finally, and most importantly, the voters choosing to remove a Republican president from office are obviously mistaken and the results overturned by Repub state legislatures or (failing that) the Repub members of Congress

Of course. We all knew it. We even detailed exactly what was going to happen before it happened: He would be ahead on election night, he’d come out and say he won and to stop the counting, and then he would start suing people when the count inexorably continued and the mail-in votes started to tip the results in the other direction. It was a little terrifying how accurate we were, to be honest.

- That Repub state officials and even legislatures would choose to obey the law and the will of the majority rather than trying to cook the books

…and even more terrifying how close it came to working: had it not been for a record turnout on the part of Democrats and enough state-level GOP officials who still retains a few shreds of decency, we could have seen the biggest electoral clusterf*ck of US history.

Although the absentee, mail-in and early votes came in first, they stuck with procedure and counted them last, since in all past elections, they were relatively few and rarely influenced the results of in-person voting.

But in 2020 it was quite different, mostly due to Covid and the GOP’s dismissive reaction to it and the way they turned it into an ideological and identity issue. That made the in-person voting GOP-heavy. And Trump knew this as well.

Dr Lizardo  Jan 30, 2021 • 7:56:20am

Pretty damning article here from Der Spiegel about the EU’s COVID-19 vaccination debacle, pinning the blame pretty much squarely on European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen:

When European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen talks about politics, there is never a shortage of superlatives and grandiloquence. Until recently, that was also true when she was talking about the extremely sensitive issue of vaccines.

In late November, von der Leyen gushed about the contracts the European Union had signed with various producers, saying it meant that Europeans would have “access to the most promising future vaccines under development” against the coronavirus. When it became clear in December that the first people in the EU would be vaccinated soon after Christmas, she even injected a bit of pathos, tweeting “It’s Europe’s moment.” When the vaccinations then began, she wrote of a “touching moment of unity” and a “European success story.”

These days, though, von der Leyen is noticeably quieter - a silence that could have to do with the fact that the erstwhile “success story” might ultimately turn out to be the greatest disaster of her entire political career.

Europe is facing a vaccine disaster. Whereas countries like Israel, Britain and the United States. are quickly moving ahead with vaccinations, the EU is reeling from a string of setbacks. First, U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech informed Brussels that it would be delivering far less vaccine than planned in the coming weeks. Then, the company AstraZeneca said it would only be delivering 31 million doses of its vaccine by the end of March instead of the 80 million Europe had been expecting. And again, the Commission was caught completely off guard.

Since then, frustration and anger has been growing across the EU. Europe, one of the most affluent regions in the world, is proving to be unable to quickly protect its citizens from a deadly disease, while other countries are showing how it is done.

And the boss is nowhere to be found.

Had she existed in her current form during Reagan, she would have wound up like legendary whackjob James “I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple. And we have talent.” Watt.

James Watt was the Evangelicals’ break-through into the higher levels of government. The media and much of the rational world were not really familiar with this phenomenon and had no idea that there was a large scale, deliberate movement behind it. He got away with a lot.

This, right here. This is the direction they are going. The GOP’s refusal to call her out, and their insistence on censuring or otherwise castigating members who won’t hitch their wagons to the Trump train, is telling. The GOP is going full-on fascist.

JFC, this isn’t normal… [Sauce]

Impeachment trial begins February 8th.
One week of bullshit from the prosecution.
Trump walks in the Monday after Valentines and shows video of Nancy ordering the Capitol break-ins. He then proceeds to show video of Nancy, Biden, Obama, Brennan, Comey, and others killing innocent children in cold blood.
MSM cuts feeds, localized chaos erupts across the nation.
Emergency broadcast is activated and marshal law is declared.
MSM either coalesces or has their facilities seized by the military. We are given reassuring messages as law and order is fully restored.
By the end of February all of the traitors have been executed in summary fashion. We only know this because Trump gives a long speech explaining what has happened, and announcing his inauguration on March 3rd.

When the pandemic started, Amazon began showing ads saying “you need to watch the next episode of The Expanse” and I was all, “uhm, not been watching any of The Expanse”. Turned out that I’d programmed my brother’s TV with my Amazon account so we could watch Japanese Godzilla movies I had and he decided to continue watching The Expanse. He later went legit and got his own Prime account after he ended up having to order cases of canned peaches for our mother. I like The Beach Boys but Jesus how uptight an asshole do you have to be to be threatened by their music. And as I understand Watt wasn’t some old fart either.

Watt thought Beach Boys fans were drunks and drug users who would “rob people” at the concert. Alternate choice Wayne Newton has been similarly targeted, ironically enough. In the 70s, Singapore’s notoriously up-tight PM, Lee Kuan Yew, banned Newton from the country for being “a long-haired hippie.”
As with many upper echelon GOPers, Watt was indicted for a federal offense after he left office, eventually pleading guilty to withholding documents and perjury in reference to an investigation of an influence peddling operation.
He is still alive at age 83.

This is actually a big deal. I loathe “Christians United For Israel” with the heat of a Type II supernova because it’s an Evangelical organization that at bottom wants to convert Jews as part of their whole endtime theorizing about Jesus’ return. That said, they have a huge mailing list and a LOT of influence among Evangelicals, who generally think MTG is cool beans. If they think MTG is a problem, getting rid of her might actually get some traction.

There’s a show on early morning Saturday’s called Knit & Crochet (then, several on sewing, I love watching them even tho I don’t do any of them any longer). Anyway, I just watched a big burly dude in a plaid shirt teaching knitting. That’s kinda crazy.

Oh and the sewing machines they use generally run $3000-$5000 dollars. Fully computerized. Plug in what your want and they do the rest. Half the time the human isn’t even needed.

I feel so old.

I don’t understand why you’d sew with a computerized machine. It’s like taking all the fun out of sewing. I have (actually my mother “borrowed” it back) a 1959 Husqvarna Viking sewing machine, one of the first with an actual integrated zig-zag stitch function. My dad bought it for my mother for their first Christmas together and it cost a whopping $300. It was a very good investment, that thing is built like a *tank*. Not that many bells and whistles, it has cams for different stitch patterns. My mother used that sewing machine to whip up clothes, curtains, all sorts of things when we were kids. I’ve used it to make clothes. I need to get it back.

Don Winslow is offering $50k to anyone who provides the FBI with info that gets Ali arrested.

Because if Ali gets taken down, it’s quite likely he’ll take Reps. Mo Brooks, Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs (head of the Freedumb Caucus and my congresscritter) down with him. And, to be honest, I’m living for this.

Andy has been throwing out his usual red meat this week, which consists of the following: “pro-life” nonsense (countered by people pointing out his COVID denialism), “OMG THE BORDER IS BEING OVERRUN”, some residual Trump worship, some criticism of Biden for not wanting unity (my response being “we can’t have unity until you drop your Big Lie of election fraud, Andy”). I’m waiting for the “we love veterans (except when we have to fund them)” stuff and the “we love small business (and fuck you all who work for large businesses). This is all to appeal to his fan club, who generally do not live in his district. It’s annoying as hell and I’m living for Andy to be taken down by his own stupidity and overreaching.

Thune thinks Trump should be tried for the attack on the Capitol, but not by the Senate? That is some high level cowardice.

This is what I have been using at work. And I have to admit they are comfortable and my allergies gone down to almost no reactions. I have recently doubled them up as recent articles have suggested. I am also thinking of putting a vacuum bag layer in between the two masks.
amazon.com

My evil too big to fail employer is sending out a “going back to work” kit which included three triple-layer cloth masks. We’re not going back until April 1 at the earliest, and probably not even full time either due to spacing requirements. Anyway, I’ve taken one of the masks which has some nice slidey things to make it tight around the mouth/chin area and am now wearing it underneath one of my other cloth masks. It’s not that I’m going out that much, but when I do, I’d like to protect myself.

My brother texted me that he had volunteered me to take my mother shopping for bras and my first response was, “Gee thanks.” The next morning I texted, “but we’re in the middle of a pandemic and I’m not taking an 81 YO woman with a walker into Macy’s”. My plan right now is to raid her lingerie drawer, tell her to pick out her best fitting bras, then examine the tags for brand and size, and order the same. Let’s hope they’re still being made.

I’m starting to think that she’s a step too far for even today’s GOP. I think that she’ll be gone in a couple of months.

Really? Her voters put her in, just like Donald Trump. The GOP could have already had her gone. They didn’t condemn or call out their voters who were giving threats to her Democratic opponent, stalking his family, &c.

They are only upset she says the quiet parts out loud, not what she does. She is the Republican Party.

Word is, you want different layers, so another cloth mask wouldn’t really help. A surgical mask or filter of nonwoven polypropylene (or any pm 2.5 filter) is what you should add.

Right now on amazon they are having a lightning deal on KN95 face masks. The price is $52 for 50. Is that a good deal or should I looks for something else?

I ordered a 50 pack for $42.50 a couple days ago. I find it hard to compare the merits of masks when ordering online, so I hope the ones I ordered are decent.

Cawthorn and Greene are the new “hires” with anti-Semitic issues. That’s one area where Boebert hasn’t yet made any real comments to indicate she shares Greene’s views. But it would be nice if all three could be ejected. Unfortunately, that would still leave 136 GOP House members who voted to decertify Biden electors.

Boebert aligns with the Proud Boys, who are explicit anti-Semites.

Ah, the Los Angeles Times with another view from nowhere.

The same paper which a few months ago published an article from an anti-pharmaceutical nutbar claiming anyone who takes a regular and lifelong medication (arguing about people with clinical depression but implying all others) was a drug addict.

Despite weeks of people with depression, high blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes, physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, &c demanding the LA Times correct the record, they refused to do so. They doubled down on the position of editorial freedom.

It’s why I ignore the Lies Angeles Times.

I gave up on that corporate rag when they joined with the Screw York Times and Washington Post to destroy Gary Webb for his exposing how Reagan’s boys let their Contra pals flood South Central LA with crack. Their hatchet job on Gary led to his suicide…

I don’t like it but civil war is here. The Capitol assault was Fort Sumter. Prepare yourselves, choose your battles wisely. The traitors and their accomplices do not have all the guns or any of the brains.
Their psychological attachment to small arms is in fact a great weakness. Their profoundly deep commitment to fake medicine and quack healthcare (their greatest financial asset) is another weakness, as is their commitment to anti-science in general. There are many options besides gun battles in the street, though the traitors’ fondness for posturing, their poor physical condition, and their ignorance of fieldcraft and operational security could make them vulnerable there, too, if the need becomes acute.

I don’t agree. I watched the video a dozen times. While it could be a woman I don’t think it is. That’s my gut take.

They have pics of the shoes and bricks in the street. What size is the shoe? How tall is the person? The FBI knows this and I’m assuming they’re letting quiet for a reason.
